The Centro Binacional para el Desarrollo Indígena Oaxaqueño (CBDIO) or Binational Center for the Development of the Indigenous Communities (CBDIO), is a nonprofit corporation, exempt from Federal income tax as described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

The use of the petate mat among indigenous peoples

The margin that decorates this web site is the image of a Petate, a mat made out of dried palm leaves. We chose this decoration to honor the creative abilities and knowledge of our indigenous ancestors. This Petate was painted by a Ñuu Savi (Mixtec) scribe in an ancient book, currently known as codex.

Before the arrival of the Europeans to the American Continent, our ancestors used the Petate as a throne on which the queens would sit when they met with the kings in conferences, sacred ceremonies, and special events.

Despite all the material and technological advances in society, the objects made out of palm leaves such as petates, tenates, and mecapales, among other home utensils, these type of products are still been made and used by the Ñuu Savi.
