The “Xi’Na Navali” or Children First Project, sponsored by First Five Fresno County, works with indigenous parents with children0-5 of age in Fresno County to provide them with the necessary tools they can use to support their children from an early age to grow healthy. The program uses the Abriendo Puertas curriculum to guide parents with information about what is expected of them as parents in the context of living in this country and how to support their children to grow up healthy and succeed in their education. Parents receive the information while their children engage in educational and interactive activities. In addition to the workshops, we do case management for participants to support them in registering their children in health and social programs, ensuring that they get the services their children need and maintain these programs on a long-term basis. To detect at an early age possible growth problem, we work with parents to answer questionnaires by looking at children’s behavior based on of their ages so as to refer them to existing programs that may intervene. In addition to the workshops, small group meetings of parents are organized for other issues that concern parents.
